KICKR Bluetooth & ANT+ Dropouts with TrainerRoad
ANT+ Device Dropouts
Here are a few things you can do to alleviate ANT+ device dropouts. Scroll down for help with Bluetooth Dropouts.

1. Get the ANT+ USB stick closer to your devices

Placing the ANT USB stick closer to your sensors will make the USB stick more likely to pick up an ANT signal. To do this, you can move your computer or iOS device closer to your sensors.

If on a computer, you can also use a USB extension cable to get the USB stick closer to your devices.

2. Sensor Battery

When a device battery gets low, the reception distance decreases. Try replacing the device battery. Some devices report their battery condition over ANT+ and we display that on the Devices page. But it is not a universal feature, and speed/cadence sensors can't report it due to a protocol limitation.

If your head unit picks up the signal, but TrainerRoad does not, try moving your head unit next to or behind your ANT+ USB stick. Sometimes a couple feet can make a big difference.

3.Interference

Wireless devices such as 2.4 GHz routers, wireless speakers and wireless mice may interfere with the ANT+ signal. ANT+ uses the 2.4 GHz band. Try moving any other wireless devices a couple of feet away.

If you suspect your router to be interfering, you can change your wireless channel.

4. Obstructions

Is something blocking the sensor? Try removing any physical obstructions between the sensor and the ANT+ device

5. Direct Line of Sight

Do your best to ensure that your computer has the most direct line of sight possible to your sensors. Simply put, the closer and more level your devices are to your ANT+ stick, the better readings you will get.

6. Software

Disable Garmin ANT Agent/Express and any other software that can take over the ANT+ USB stick.

7. Computer battery setting

Some PC's have variable battery settings. If your battery is set to "balanced", your computer may not be allocating enough power to the USB ports for the ANT+ stick to work well. Switch your power-management setting to "high performance".

Bluetooth Smart (4.0) Dropouts

1. Interference
Other wireless devices such as wireless speakers and keyboards can sometimes cause interference with your BT 4.0 devices. Try turning them off or moving them away from your setup.

Android Connectivity issues
Due to changes in more recent versions of the Android OS, Location Services (as well as Bluetooth services) needs to be switched on for your Android smartphone and/or tablet device.  This can typically be found under 'Settings' in the app menu.

Location services should always be switched on regardless of whether the activity is indoors or outdoors.

RFLKT Pairing Issues

ISSUE

New firmware for the RFLKT/RFLKT+ allows you to get call and text notifications! However, once RFLKT+ is updated, and you go to pair with the app in the phone (iPhone 5 & 6), it shows connecting and "connects", the RFLKT+ may turn itself off.

HOW TO FIX

  1. In the 'Saved Sensors' screen in the Wahoo Fitness app, make sure that the RFLKT is listed as a sensor.
  2. Make sure the RFLKT is off - hold the top two buttons to power it off if necessary
  3. Close out of all open apps
  4. 'Forget' the sensor in your Bluetooth settings.
  5. Reset the RFLKT - hold the top two buttons for 10 seconds, the device will turn on and then back off.
  6. Open the Wahoo Fitness app - go to the 'Sensors' screen
  7. Power on the RFLKT - press the top left button, and wait for the prompt to set up pairing before saving the sensor

Providing Spindown data

To enable this to happen correctly, you should have a working internet connection on the device you are using the Wahoo Fitness app ... the KICKR and/or the Snap registration will take place as you pair each of these trainers to the Wahoo Fitness app.

Wahoo are able pull in this spin down data regardless of whether they register or not.

Registration at this time, allows you to get email updates from Wahoo Fitness.

Garmin Connect and Wahoo
Garmin has now ceased supporting the API Wahoo uses to offer direct uploads of the workout data from our App to Garmin Connect. This means the Garmin Connect authorization page in the Companion App (Wahoo Fitness) will no longer be active, and eventually removed.

Please note this not a flaw/bug in the Wahoo App but a decision made by Garmin that Wahoo have no control over.

That said, there are still ways for users to upload data to Garmin Connect, Wahoo just cant do it for them automatically any longer.

Your options are:

1     Connect your ELEMNT to a PC and manually upload the file to Garmin Connect.

2     From the ELEMNT App (in your phone)

  • select share
  • select the share icon (top right side when viewing an event) and
  • email the FIT file to a location of your choice for manual upload to Garmin Connect

3     On the same ELEMNT App Share menu page

  • you can click Open in and
  • select any of your available cloud storage platforms for transfer.
  • From there you can then manually upload to Garmin Connect.

4     Stop using Garmin Connect, there are many other options.

ELEMNT - Pairing issues - iPhone / iPad
Unpairing your ELEMNT after an iOS update might be required to reestablish a new pairing. Updates to iOS may cause a 'phone pairing failed' message after the update.

To resolve, try unpairing the ELEMNT

  1. Remove the ELEMNT from your phones Bluetooth settings:
Open the settings app on your mobile device - select Bluetooth - locate the ELEMNT in the list of "My Devices" - select the lower case "i" to the right of the ELEMNT - select "Forget This Device"
  2. Open the ELEMNT Companion app.
  3. Within the app, press the 'Settings' button
  4. "Unpair ELEMNT" then "Pair"
  5. Scan the QR code with the camera in the Companion app

If this does not help, you may need to reset your network settings. To do this, go to: Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings.

KICKR Bluetooth Connectivity Issues

Please follow these three steps to isolate the issue.

1. Unplug the Kickr/Snap for 5 minutes.

2. Close all additional apps (on all nearby devices) capable of connecting to the trainer (see below)

Trainers can only connect to one device or app at a time. Most apps are capable of running in the background on devices, and continuing to have a connection to the KICKR/Snap, will prevent other apps from connecting to the Trainer or can cause conflicting commands to be sent to the Trainer.

iOS Devices

1. Close Apps - this link shows how to close the apps on iOS - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201330

2. Perform a network reset - note this will require you to re-enter wifi passwords, as it resets wifi too.
a - Open the Settings app
b - Click on General
c - Click on Reset
d - Click on Reset Network Settings

Android Devices

- Simply restart your phone

Garmin Devices

- If you have a Garmin computer, turn this off

3. KICKR / KICKR SNAP Firmware

a. Check that firmware on the KICKR or KICKR SNAP is up to date, which can be done through the free Wahoo Fitness App (Wahoo Fitness -> saved sensors -> Kickr/Snap)

Unhappy face - ELEMNT

If you manage to see an unhappy face, when you plug in your ELEMNT to charge ... it does mean something ... it means that the USB port you have plugged your device into is NOT receiving enough power to charge your device; this is also true of many other devices plugged in to charge.

This can often be because the USB port on the laptop you are using isn't configured that way, and please note that the COLOURS of USB ports is VERY important:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#Colors .... thank you Wikipedia!

IF the device after a period of time of charging doesn't seem to have charged ... either find yourself a different USB port, or ... grab an AC wall block and charge it that way.

... and don't forget that almost ALL laptops, unless settings have been altered, are set to turn off power to USB ports when they go to sleep, so your device will NOT charge at all.

Cadence issues

IF you have a TICKR X and having some issues ... the X behaves as a cadence meter, but the data is really only good for indoor cycling.

Only real workaround at the moment is to ensure you turn the bike crank to connect the RPM before you put the HR monitor on.

5) Connect to WiFi via the Companion App settings page
6) Go into ELEMNT menu > Planned Workouts > Sync

Once you've done this you'll want to hit sort to go over to your scheduled workouts.

Also -

The Training Peaks workout must be created using training blocks and the workout must be scheduled.

Cadence sensor draining batteries?

If your cadence sensor is draining batteries very quickly, a couple of things to check:
  • Ensure the battery is not a 50cent cheapie from the dollar and dime store.  These will maybe give you an hour or two ... and then fail.  This is a known fact.
  • Update the firmware in the cadence sensor.

The update is completed by installing and using Wahoo UTILITY for this (updating) purpose ONLY

Once the update of your Wahoo device/sensor is completed, UNINSTALL Wahoo Utility.  It can be reinstalled anytime ... if you do not uninstall it, you risk data loss.

TICKR & RPM Sensors - issues with pairing?
Here are some helpful tips for troubleshooting Wahoo Sensors:

1. Ensure the replacement battery has at least 3.0 volts (where applicable) ... making sure also that the battery is a reputable brand!  Many cheaper batteries may start out at 3.0 volts, but lose their charge rapidly once they are in use.

2. Ensure the sensor is not connected to additional apps (or devices) - turn off all other nearby Bluetooth/ANT+ connected devices!

3. Ensure the firmware of the RPM is up to date https://support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000738464-Updating-Firmware-on-Wahoo-Sensors

Try resetting the Sensor - to do this:

a. Remove the battery
b. Flip the battery upside down and reinstall
c. Leave battery installed upside down for 3 seconds
d. Remove the battery and reinstall correctly
e. Place and put the battery cover back on (if the cover is not secured properly, this can cause rapid battery drain)

If you have tried all of the above and issues persist - please open a Support Ticket!

KICKR and XD drivers

Wahoo do not offer an XD driver type freehub body option for the KICKR (nor do 3rd party's, at the time of writing).

11 speed XD Driver equipped bikes (which use a 142 or 148 x 12 thru axle) is compatible with the 17 KICKR. The customer needs to use the 11 speed cassette that comes standard on the 17 KICKR (the XD cassette will not fit on the KICKR, any attempt to do so will void the warranty).

To use a 12 speed XD driver equipped bike with the 2017 KICKR, Wahoo successfully tested the SunRace MZ90 12-speed 11-50T Cassette on the 2017 KICKR (then tested with a SRAM Eagle equipped bike). This cassette uses the standard Shimano/ SRAM cassette splines.

The limits on the rear derailleur required an adjustment. We also adjusted the cable tension. The Youtube link below will clarify more.

KICKR - releasing the brake
Take the firmware back to get the brake to release.

Reverting to older firmware for Kickr1

Here are the steps for doing this: iOS only.
  1. Open the Wahoo Fitness app.
  2. Click the sensors icon on the bottom left side of the app.
  3. Click on find a new sensor and select the KICKR.
  4. Click on the Wahoo KICKR when it appears and wait for it to connect.
  5. Click the grey KICKR icon with the Bluetooth emblem in it 5 times to bring you to the firmware update screen.
  6. Click on version 1.4.47.
  7. After that update you will be asked to update to newer firmware and should then be prompted to do an advanced spindown.
  8. This is important as it sets the brake strength of the Kickr.
If you aren't prompted to perform one I have included the instructions below. -
